Derby County boss Wayne Rooney dismisses speculation linking him with the managerial position at Newcastle United.

Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has distanced himself from speculation linking him with the Newcastle United job.

The Magpies are currently assessing their options after making the decision to part ways with Steve Bruce on Wednesday morning.

Rooney is one of a wide array of names which was mentioned in the days before Bruce's departure having impressed while working in difficult circumstances at Pride Park.

However, the England legend has reaffirmed his commitment to trying to move the Rams off the bottom of the Championship table.

Speaking to DerbyshireLive, Rooney said: "I saw that this morning [Tuesday]. From my point of view I cannot stop speculation, I get that.

"I have had no contact at all with Newcastle United and obviously, as I have stated before, I am committed to this football club."

The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund have handed the temporary reins to Bruce's assistant Graeme Jones.
