Steve McClaren encouraged by Newcastle United performance

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren says that there were "a lot of positives" to take from Sunday's Premier League opener against Southampton.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has stated that there were "a lot of positives" to take from Sunday's Premier League clash against Southampton.

The Magpies drew 2-2 with the Saints at St James' Park on the opening day of the season.

A late goal from Shane Long denied former England boss McClaren a win in his first competitive match in charge of Newcastle.

"I went through every emotion," McClaren told BBC Sport.

"We played some terrific football and could have been out of sight. There were a lot of positives. It would have been a travesty if we had lost."

Newcastle travel to Swansea City next Sunday.
