Jonas Gutierrez pleased to exceed expectations

Jonas Gutierrez believes that Newcastle United can deem this season a success, even if the club fail to secure a Champions League spot.

Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez believes that the Magpies can list this season as a success, even if they fail to secure Champions League football for next season.

The North East side are currently one point away from fourth spot, but with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea all vying for the same place, a victory over Everton next weekend is vital if Newcastle are to remain in contention for the position.

"Whatever happens, we are talking about a great season for Newcastle," The Express quotes Gutierrez as saying. "In the last eight games, we have won six, so we have to be pleased with the way we have been playing.

"We have one more game and we have to keep focused on that. If we win, then we shall see what happens, but it would be fitting to get three points and for us to go out on a high.

"Even if we lose at Everton, we can still be proud of what we have done. Getting into the Champions League would be great, but if we have the Europa League then that too is something fantastic."

The Magpies travel to Goodison Park next Sunday.
