Turnbull and Hastie partnership pays off for Motherwell

The pair combined for Motherwell's winning goal against Hibernian.

Teenagers David Turnbull and Jake Hastie were delighted to bring their long-standing playing relationship to the big stage with Motherwell.

Hastie, making his first start for the club, turned and ran from inside his own half before sliding in Turnbull to sweep home first time and earn Motherwell a 1-0 win over Hibernian on Wednesday.

Midfielder Turnbull, who has now scored four goals for Well, told the club's Twitter account: "Jake put it on a plate for me. I have played with him since I was 10 years old and he has put balls on a plate for me all the time. It's good to do it on the big stage."

Winger Hastie, who has just returned from a loan spell with Alloa, added: "Me and Davie have come all the way up together. I just slid him in, I know what he's capable of, and he showed it there."

Another academy graduate, Allan Campbell, joined the pair in midfield to help Motherwell banish some of the pain of their William Hill Scottish Cup exit, and manager Stephen Robinson was delighted with their contribution.

On Turnbull, he said: "There is no doubting he has real, real quality. We have been on at him about not letting runners go and doing the dirty work of the game, so the pleasing aspect for me was how well he did off the ball, staying with runners and being disciplined, not being a luxury in the team.

"I said to him if he wants to go to the next level, that's the bits he has to add to his game and he really did that. If we get that level of consistency, he is a real top prospect."

Robinson added: "Jake was excellent. For 50-60 minutes, him and Gboly (Ariyibi) caused real problems when we got the ball out wide to them. That's something we have lacked in our play. They get fans off their seats and people excited.

"For a young boy, with his drive and his energy, Jake has no fear."

Meanwhile, Motherwell have confirmed the appointment of former player Maurice Ross as their new reserve-team manager after Stephen Craigan stepped down towards the end of last year.

The 37-year-old has five years of head coach experience in Scandinavia, leading Sola to consecutive promotions in Norway and winning the Faroese Super Cup with Víkingur Gota.

Ross said: "Fundamentally I am going to be looking after the current reserves side, monitoring the under-18s and assisting with the first team."

Robinson added: "He was very impressive on the training pitch. He has energy, showed great detail in his session and will bring fresh ideas to the club. I am looking forward to working with him."
