Marseille held by Nice

Ligue 1 title contenders Marseille concede a late goal to draw 2-2 with Nice at home.

Marseille have gone one point clear at the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-2 draw with Nice at Stade Velodrome.

However, Paris Saint-Germain can leapfrog them with a victory over Montpellier away from home later on Sunday.

It was all Marseille in the opening exchanges, with Benoit Cheyrou coming close twice with headers in the opening nine minutes.

Then Andre Ayew tried his luck with a left-footed shot from outside the box before Jordan Ayew saw his attempt saved by Nice goalkeeper David Ospina.

The hosts were given the perfect chance to take the lead in the 27th minute when Kevin Gomis conceded a penalty by bringing down Morgan Amalfitano inside his own area.

However, Ospina rose up to the challenge and saved Mathieu Valbuena's spot kick.

Ospina again denied Marseille just a minute later when he kept out Amalfitano's shot from the right side of the Nice box.

Five minutes from time, the visiting goalkeeper was eventually beaten when Andre Ayew headed home Valbuena's cross from close range.

Amalfitano went close to doubling the hosts' advantage in the first minute of the second half, but it was Nice who scored the second goal of the match.

Six minutes into the restart Dario Cvitanich headed home a well-measured Eric Bautheac delivery.

Marseille, though, continued to dominate proceedings as Andre Ayew rattled the Nice crossbar with a left-footed shot from close range in the 68th minute.

Moments later Valbuena made it 2-1 to the hosts at Stade Velodrome when he found the target with his left foot from close range..

There was yet more drama to come in the match, as Fabrice Abriel latched on to Camel Meriem's pass to shoot home from just yards out with just two minutes of normal time left.
