Chelsea transfer news: Alejandro Garnacho calls Blues "the best team in the world" as £40m move is confirmed

"We're the best team in the world" - Garnacho completes long-awaited Chelsea switch

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, with the Argentina international penning a contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2032.

Garnacho was at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to watch Enzo Maresca's side beat Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League, suggesting that his switch to the Club World Cup holders was imminent.

The 21-year-old's move to Chelsea has now been confirmed, joining the capital outfit for a fee of £40m, and he has become the ninth signing of a busy summer transfer window for the Blues.

The deal includes a 10% sell-on fee, and it is the fourth-largest sale in Man United's history after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria, while his exit counts as pure profit under the Premier League's rules surrounding profit and sustainability, making it a lucrative deal for the Red Devils.

"It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I can’t wait to get started. I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy," Garnacho told Chelsea's official website after the move was confirmed.

Chelsea sign Garnacho from Man United in £40m deal

Garnacho could make his debut for Chelsea in their Premier League clash with Brentford on September 13.

However, it will take some time before the attacker is up to full speed, as he has not taken to the field in a competitive match since the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Garnacho was left out of Man United's final match of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign against Aston Villa, while he was not involved in their preparations for the new season after his fall-out with Ruben Amorim.

The attacker hit out at Amorim after he was left out of the starting XI for the Europa League final, while his agent and brother also had firm words for the Man United head coach.

Amorim informed Garnacho soon after that he was free to leave this summer, with the ex-Atletico Madrid youngster not featuring in the Portuguese's plans moving forward.

Will Garnacho star for Chelsea in the coming years?

In football, there are no guarantees, but Chelsea will believe that they have got a good deal, signing a 21-year-old with 144 first-team appearances to his name for £40m.

Garnacho managed 26 goals and 22 assists during his time in the Man United first team, including 11 goals and 10 assists in 58 appearances in all competitions last term.

The forward has the potential to be a star for Chelsea in the coming seasons, but there were off-the-field concerns during his time at Old Trafford, and it is far from certain that Stamford Bridge will give him his happy ever after.
