Manchester United to give Bastian Schweinsteiger £10m payoff?

A report claims that Manchester United chiefs are happy to see Bastian Schweinsteiger leave for nothing in January, and will even pay off £10m of his wages.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay outcast midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger £10m to get him off their books in the New Year.

The Red Devils are said to be hopeful that an interested party will come forward for the ex-Germany international, who has yet to feature under Jose Mourinho, should his transfer fee be waived.

Despite being granted permission to train with the first team earlier this week, The Sun claims that United are merely allowing the 32-year-old to regain fitness ahead of a January switch and are resigned to taking a major hit on him.

Schweinsteiger is thought to be on £180,000 a week at Old Trafford, meaning that he is owed £18m in wages with two years of his deal still left to run, with the same report suggesting that United chiefs are happy to see him leave on a free.

An insider is quoted by the publication as saying: "Bastian is fulfilling his obligations by training each day and is in terrific shape.

"He's looking as good as he has since he arrived at the club. United are hoping a club will still come forward to take him off their hands in the upcoming window, but there are no takers as of yet."

Schweinsteiger, who joined United from Bayern Munich in 2015 for a fee in the region of £14m, last featured for the Red Devils in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in March.
