Bryan Robson wants Gareth Bale at Manchester United

Bryan Robson says that the acquisition of Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale would represent a "really good signing" for Manchester United if it materialises.

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has backed the club's reported pursuit of Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale.

On Tuesday it was reported that United lodged two bids in excess of £100m for the 26-year-old, who sealed a world-record £85m move to Real from Tottenham Hotspur two years ago.

The Welsh star struggled for form and fitness last term and fell foul of the Blancos' fans on a number of occasions as speculation of a return to England mounted.

"Bringing Bale in would be a really good signing if it was to happen," Robson, who spent 13 years at Old Trafford, told ESPN.

"The good thing with Bale, and this is what the manager likes, is he can play in two different positions - he can play wide coming in and also as a centre-forward.

"It will be really difficult but if the manager can add him to the squad I think he will be a happy man."

Bale is contracted to the Santiago Bernabeu club until 2019.
