Les Reed confident of Nathaniel Clyne stay

Les Reed is hoping that right-back Nathaniel Clyne will sign a new contract with Southampton, despite reported interest from Manchester United.

Southampton's executive director Les Reed has insisted that the "signs are good" with regards to Nathaniel Clyne's contract situation.

The right-back has just over 12 months left to run on his current deal at the St Mary's Stadium, which is said to have alerted Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

However, Reed has revealed that talks over a new deal for the 24-year-old on the South Coast are progressing well.

"We're in constant communication. These contract negotiations are never just one meeting, where everything is done and sorted out," he told talkSPORT.

"You have to bear in mind, especially with Nathaniel, that we want him to focus on the last few games of the season.

"That's quite normal and he's very happy. He's managed to force himself into the England squad and is showcasing his talents. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't speculation about him, but at the moment the signs are good."

Clyne joined the Saints from Crystal Palace back in 2012.
