Mikel Arteta reveals that Premier League leaders Arsenal will be "very active" in the transfer market ahead of the January window.

Mikel Arteta has revealed that Arsenal will be "very active" in the transfer market ahead of the January window.

The Gunners spent around £120m on five players over the summer, with Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira the standout names brought to the Emirates Stadium on permanent deals.

Arsenal have since made an impressive start to the 2022-23 campaign and they currently sit top of the Premier League table after 14 matches, five points clear of reigning champions Manchester City.

Indeed, Jesus is one of a number of Gunners stars who has excelled in North London this season, recording five goals and six assists in 14 Premier League appearances, but the striker is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury while on international duty with Brazil at the 2022 World Cup.

The 25-year-old underwent successful surgery last week and there are fears that he could be ruled out until March, which has prompted suggestions of Arsenal delving back into the transfer market to recruit a replacement.

Despite a recent report claiming that Arsenal have no plans to sign a new centre-forward in January, Arteta has confirmed that the club intend to be "very active" in the winter window.

Speaking to reporters after Arsenal's friendly win over AC Milan in the Dubai Super Cup, Arteta said: "We are looking and we are very active looking at the possibilities. If we can find the players that can strengthen the team we will try."

Asked whether any players at the World Cup have caught his eye, the Spaniard added: "There are a few for sure, and a few national teams, what some of the national teams are doing is very interesting and it shows where the game is and how the game is evolving. Any individual player I will keep it to myself."

Arsenal have been linked with a plethora of attacking players across Europe, but it is thought that Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhaylo Mudryk is their primary target heading into the New Year.

A recent report claims that the Gunners are confident of striking a deal with the Ukrainian giants for the 21-year-old attacker in January.

However, the North Londoners will likely face stern competition from the likes of Manchester United, Man City and Newcastle United to sign Mudryk, who is valued at €100m (£86m) by Shakhtar football director Darijo Srna.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, with one report claiming that they have emerged as the favourites to sign the wantaway Portugal international.

Atletico's Matheus Cunha has also been linked with a move the Emirates along with the likes of Orlando City's Facundo Torres, Barcelona's Ferran Torres, Roma's Tammy Abraham and Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Arsenal will return to Premier League action with a home encounter against West Ham United on Boxing Day before concluding 2022 with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on New Year's Eve.
