Manchester United are in danger of failing to sign a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer window closes on Monday, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
However Ornstein has suggested that a deal for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens is “more probable” at this stage than a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
Man United are known to be in the market for a new shot-stopper as they are keen to make an upgrade on mistake-prone duo Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, who have not made ideal starts to the new campaign.
Unai Emery has refused to rule out the possibility of Martinez leaving Villa after the Argentine was left out of the matchday squad for Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace amidst uncertainty over his future.
The Red Devils are said to have made an approach for Martinez, while they are also allegedly at an advanced stage in negotiations to sign 23-year-old Lammens.
Discussing Man United’s goalkeeper situation, Ornstein said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “Manchester United are considering a goalkeeper signing this deadline day. Senne Lammens, of Royal Antwerp, is a player they have been considering as a priority.
“There was also some evaluation and targeting of Martinez some time ago. They made a loan offer. That conversation has been reheated but it is unclear which of those two goalkeepers they would go for if they make a signing.
“I think Lammens actually might be more probable but a final decision hasn't been made, as far as I know.
“It is plausible that they finish the window without signing a goalkeeper and stick with their current options.
“However, it will depend on outgoings. If they get rid of players then a goalkeeping signing becomes more likely.”
Man United are set to generate funds from the sale of Antony to Real Betis, as both clubs have reportedly agreed a fee of €25m (£21.6m) plus adds-ons ahead of the deadline.
