Manchester United reportedly remain in talks to sign Burnley forward Wout Weghorst, who is currently impressing on loan at Besiktas.

Manchester United reportedly remain in talks with Burnley as they bid to sign Wout Weghorst.

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to depart Old Trafford on a free transfer, it has been well documented that United have been in the hunt for a replacement.

A wide array of players have been linked with a switch to the Red Devils, from Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix to Vincent Aboubakar who has just been released by Al-Nassr due to Ronaldo's arrival.

However, over the past 48 hours, Weghorst has seemingly emerged as United's primary target courtesy of his form for Besiktas and the Netherlands.

As well as netting twice for Oranje against Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals, the 30-year-old has contributed eight goals in 16 league games on loan at his current Turkish club.

When Weghorst scored versus Kasimpasa at the weekend, he appeared to say his goodbye to supporters, something which did not go down well with president Ceyhun Kazanci.

As quoted by Fanatik, Kazanci said: "I don't understand why Weghorst said goodbye to the fans, why he made such a move. He is our football player right now. Our contract expires at the end of the season.

"If Manchester United or any other team wants Weghorst, they will meet with Burnley anyway. Burnley will then contact us and discuss the terms of separation. If we accept, the contract will be terminated.

"Otherwise, it will go on until the end of the season. He can't just go. There will have to be a reward for us to approve the separation."

According to the Daily Mail, Besiktas have an option to sign Weghorst for £8.5m at the end of the season.

That is the reasoning behind Besiktas wishing to receive compensation should they give the green light for Weghorst to cut short his loan spell at Vodafone Park.

United and Burnley are allegedly continuing to hold talks regarding facilitating a deal for a player who failed to help keep the Clarets in the Premier League last season.

Weghorst contributed two goals and three assists from 20 appearances after leaving Wolfsburg in a deal worth £12m.

United have already pulled off one loan deal during the January transfer window, completing the signing of goalkeeper Jack Butland from Crystal Palace.
