Madrid reject €150m United double bid?

Real Madrid have rejected a €150m (£109m) bid from Manchester United for Gareth Bale and Raphael Varane, according to reports.

United have long been linked with a move for Bale, who endured a difficult second season in Spain following his world-record switch to Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur.

It was initially thought that United would attempt to use David de Gea as a makeweight in any deal for Bale, with the Spanish goalkeeper understood to be seen by Madrid as a long-term successor for Iker Casillas.

However, the Red Devils have now launched a big-money swoop for both Bale and Varane, according to various media outlets in Spain.

United manager Louis van Gaal is thought to have made bolstering his defence a priority in this summer's transfer window, although Madrid are unlikely to sanction the sale of the highly-rated Varane.

The Spanish giants are also expected to confirm Rafael Benitez as their new manager tomorrow morning, and the former Liverpool boss has reportedly decided to build his team around Bale.

Meanwhile, Madrid's pursuit of De Gea appears to be one step closer to fruition after the keeper reportedly decided to return to the Spanish capital.
