Man United transfer news: Red Devils 'make decision' on signing Joshua Zirkzee replacement

Forward thinking: Man United 'make decision' on signing Zirkzee replacement

Manchester United have reportedly devised their transfer strategy surrounding striker Joshua Zirkee.

The forward has been linked with a return to Italian football in recent times, with Roma known to be keen on signing the 24-year-old.

Zirkzee has played a bit-part role for Ruben Amorim's troops this term, featuring in just four Premier League matches and failing to earn a start.

Last season, the Dutchman endured a hit-and-miss time at Old Trafford, netting a modest tally of seven goals across 49 competitive appearances.

As a result of his lack of game time in Manchester, Zirkzee has fallen down the pecking order for the Netherlands, for whom he has made six senior appearances.

Man United devise Zirkzee strategy?

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have devised their transfer strategy regarding Zirkzee ahead of the winter trading point.

The report claims that the Red Devils will only allow the 24-year-old to depart Old Trafford should they source an adequate replacement.

It is understood that Roma are the current frontrunners in the race for Zirkzee, who is wanted on an initial loan deal by the Serie A giants.

There is also a possible return to a former club on the cards for the Dutchman, with fifth-placed Bologna supposedly eyeing a move for the striker.

Following the final international break of the calendar year, Zirkzee and Man United return to action with the hosting of Everton on Monday night.

Man United planning ahead

With news emerging that Benjamin Sesko could be out for a month with injury, Manchester United need to manage their forward options carefully.

The Slovenian could be joined on the domestic sidelines by attacking duo Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, who are set to compete at the Africa Cup of Nations this winter.

As a result, Amorim's side could be left short at the top end of the pitch, an issue that would be inflamed by the departure of Zirkzee to Serie A.
