The most positive development in Manchester United's transfer window arrived at Old Trafford when Carlos Baleba completed his medical and signed a five-year contract, with a deal worth £65m guaranteed plus £5m in bonuses agreed with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Baleba, 22, made 112 appearances for Brighton after arriving from Lille, scoring four goals including three in the Premier League, and will add the combative midfield presence United have needed since Manuel Ugarte's knee injury and Casemiro's exit removed two defensive options from Carrick's engine room.

The Cameroon international carries a pre-existing ankle complaint that means he is unlikely to be immediately available, with his potential debut pencilled in for the Manchester derby against City on September 13.

With Baleba solving a midfield problem, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly could provide the solution to the left-back issue, amid claims that Man Utd still want the Hale End graduate.

Alejandro Balde of Barcelona also moved closer, with United submitting a firm proposal to the Spanish left-back after Barcelona left the 21-year-old out of their squad for their first La Liga fixture, a signal widely interpreted as confirmation that the club are open to a sale.
