Robin van Persie seals win for Manchester United

Robin van Persie's first-minute goal has helped Manchester United to a 1-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman's early shot was deflected past Jussi Jaaskelainen by James Collins, getting the hosts off to the perfect start.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson's men did not have it all their own way, as the Hammers showed attacking intent in the first half.

Jaaskelainen was forced to save twice in quick succession before the half-time whistle. The Finn first kept out Anderson's shot, before reacting quickest to Javier Hernandez's follow-up.

The Red Devils struggled to break down a resilient West Ham side, while Jaaskelainen was in no mood to concede another.

Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick were the next to test him, but he was alert to both.

Modibo Maiga managed to create a chance for himself in the dying seconds by shaking off Jonny Evans's challenge and having a dip at goal, but it was too high.

In the end, United went on to secure all three points.
