Wayne Rooney "excited" about return to striking role

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney admits that he is relishing his return to a central striking role at the club next season.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is "excited" about the prospect of returning to the role as a central striker next season.

The 29-year-old spent part of the last campaign playing behind the frontman and also in the centre of midfield, which prevented him from finding the net with regularity in a season that yielded just 14 goals.

Following the sale of Robin van Persie and departure of Radamel Falcao at the end of the season, Rooney will move back into his striking role, where he is hopeful that he can notch over 20 goals in the next campaign.

He told reporters: "It's where I like and I'm sure it's where I will play. It's obviously on me to score goals. It's where the manager and myself see my best position. Hopefully I can get a good run of games and repay the manager and score goals for the team.

"I've played different roles over the years for United but you only have to look when I play for England as a striker I score goals. I hope to score 20 or more goals again. If I'm playing as a striker, then I will be disappointed if I can't do that again.

"I'm excited about the season. It's a big season for us. We have the quality to make sure we get back into the Champions League."

Rooney last scored over 20 goals in a season in the 2011-12 campaign.
