Report: Wayne Rooney desperate for Manchester United captaincy

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney reportedly feels that he is the outstanding candidate to become the club's new captain.

Wayne Rooney is desperate to become the next captain of Manchester United, according to a report.

The Red Devils are without a skipper following the departure of Nemanja Vidic, who left the club to join Inter Milan earlier this month.

Rooney feels that his 10 years at the club and status in the United squad make him the outstanding candidate for the role.

However, the 28-year-old is concerned that new boss Louis van Gaal may hand the armband to Robin van Persie, who is his skipper for the Netherlands, reports The People.

Van Gaal is poised to join up with United in the next week after guiding the Oranje to third place at the World Cup following their win over Brazil.
