Mike Phelan: 'Manchester United didn't have cutting edge'

Mike Phelan says that Manchester United lacked a "cutting edge" in their 1-0 loss to Sunderland this afternoon.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has said that the Red Devils lacked a "cutting edge" in their 1-0 loss to Sunderland this afternoon.

Ryan Giggs took charge of the Red Devils for only the second time, but was unable to prevent his side's seventh home loss of the season.

"United didn't have that cutting edge or craft in their forward play, and Sunderland capitalised on that," the 51-year-old told reporters. "They defended tightly, allowed United width and caused United a few problems as well."

United have two Premier League fixtures remaining - against Hull City and Southampton - as they attempt to wrestle sixth spot away from Tottenham.
