Romelu Lukaku: 'Jose Mourinho convinced me to join Manchester United'

Romelu Lukaku claims that Jose Mourinho has "always had a lot of belief" in him, admitting that he could not turn down the chance to work with the Portuguese once again.

Romelu Lukaku has revealed that he was "really convinced" to join Manchester United following a conversation with manager Jose Mourinho earlier this summer.

The 24-year-old was reportedly at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war between United and former club Chelsea, eventually opting for the Red Devils following a drawn-out saga.

Lukaku was thought to have been tempted to join United by his close friend Paul Pogba, but the Belgian insists that being made the main man at Old Trafford under Mourinho - rather than linking up with the world's most expensive midfielder - was simply too big a pull to turn down.

"The conversation I had with the manager really convinced me the most," he told reporters. "He told me of his plans, about how he wanted to rebuild the club, and wanted me to be part of it.

"[Me and Paul] were just on holiday together. I had to make my own choices. [Mourinho] is a manager who has always had a lot of belief in me and I believe in his methods. It is going to be good to work together again. There is a lot of work to be done and I'm delighted that there is as it means I can become even better than I am.

"I've been working to be a pro since I was 11 years old. I've always had a goal to win as many trophies as I can and to play for a club like Manchester United. I want to grab this opportunity."

Lukaku has opened his scoring account on United's pre-season tour of the United States, netting against both Real Salt Lake and Manchester City.
