John Hartson: 'Bastian Schweinsteiger's legs have gone'

John Hartson says that Bastian Schweinsteiger's legs have gone and insists that the German is not good enough to play for Manchester United.

John Hartson has claimed that Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is no longer good enough to play at the top level and says that the German's "legs have gone".

The former Bayern Munich man played 70 minutes as United lost 3-2 at Wolfsburg to suffer only a second Champions League group-stage exit in the last decade on Tuesday night.

Hartson singled out the 31-year-old for criticism after the match and says that the midfielder is representative of the club's recent failure in the transfer market.

"I think that Bastian Schweinsteiger is a quarter of the player that we are used to seeing," Hartson told BBC Radio 5 live. "That man used to boss games, but now he does not have the legs.

"He can only play in holding midfield. Well that is okay but my dad could play there, passing five yards to the left and five to the right. Schweinsteiger was bossed tonight and was hauled off.

"United cannot afford to be a club that just gives players a pay day. They need legs, they need more power in midfield."

Schweinsteiger signed for United on a three-year deal for around £6.5m in the summer transfer window to end a 17-year association with Bayern.
