Gascoigne: 'I'm shocked at players' wages'

England legend Paul Gascoigne has criticised the amount of money that young footballers earn, and revealed that he would only ever "pay to watch" Manchester United's young guns.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has admitted that he is "not a great fan" of football now that his playing career is over. However, the 44-year-old believes that Sir Alex Ferguson has got the right idea.

"I've not watched a lot of football lately but these young kids at Man United are the ones I'd pay to watch," talkSPORT quotes Gascoigne as saying.

"I'm not a great fan now I'm not playing. I just can't believe how bad the standard is sometimes and how much they get paid.

"How can someone be happy sitting on the bench every week, even if they are getting paid 60 grand? I'm not bitter, I don't care how much they earn, as long as they try their best in training."

The former midfielder was close to a move to Old Trafford before signing for Spurs in 1988.
