Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes that Sir Alex Ferguson's side need to focus on reaching the top spot of their Champions League group to avoid tougher opponents in the knockout stage.
The Red Devils will only need a point from their final group match against Basle to top the group, if they record a victory over Benfica tomorrow.
"You do want to finish top," the Press Association quotes Fletcher as saying. "First and foremost you look to qualify for the knockout stages but we saw Arsenal finish second last season and end up with Barcelona in the first knockout round.
"Although people say you have to beat these teams if you want to win the competition, it is good to avoid them until later on.
"It also gives you little perks like having the second leg at home. There are a few aspects to topping the group which benefit you in the long run."
United take on the Portuguese side at Old Trafford tomorrow evening.
