Sir Alex Ferguson says that clubs like Manchester City have created an "insane" transfer market.

Sir Alex Ferguson has slammed Manchester City for overspending and inflating the price of players.

The Citizens have splashed the cash since being taken over by Sheikh Mansour, of the Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited, in 2008.

Ferguson believes that frivolous spending has created an "insane" market where players go for well beyond their worth.

"It's been an insane transfer market for a long time and I think clubs like City create that," blasted Ferguson. "They can buy all the players and put a marker on all the players and that makes it difficult for clubs then to be reasonable.

"There's no chance of that calming down and I don't see how the financial fair play can work. No-one can match City's financial power – no-one. We have to accept that, so we do it a different way.

"We'll try to look at young players with the potential to develop in the club, which we're good at, so we'll stay with that."

The Red Devils are said to be competing with City for the signing of Eden Hazard.
