Ferguson: 'Sammon red card was harsh'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Wigan Athletic striker Conor Sammon was unlucky to have been sent off this afternoon.

The 25-year-old was handed his marching orders following a clash with United midfielder Michael Carrick.

"I thought it was a softish one in that I don't think the boy acted intentionally," Ferguson told BBC Radio Five Live. "He's a big aggressive lad, and I think he has thrown his arm.

"Michael has not made a meal of it which is good and he left the decision for the referee to make. It was a bit harsh, I have to say that."

United went on to win the fixture 5-0.
