Rio Ferdinand: 'League position is embarrassing'

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand admits that the club's league position this season is "embarrassing".

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has admitted that the club's league position this season is "embarrassing".

United have struggled in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with David Moyes lasting just 10 months in the job before he was sacked following a 2-0 defeat to former club Everton earlier this month.

The Red Devils are languishing down in seventh place in the Premier League table, a full 20 points behind leaders Liverpool, and while Moyes has faced the brunt of the criticism for their poor season, Ferdinand believes that the players should take some of the responsibility as well.

"I've not looked at the league table for ages because you don't want to. It's embarrassing. You don't want to look at the league table and see where we are," Ferdinand is quoted as saying by PA.

"The players take responsibility as much as anyone else. We are where we are and we have to take some responsibility for that. We are not shirkers and we are not people who don't take responsibility. I don't think you get to where we have got to in our careers without taking responsibility and this is no different."

Ferdinand also expressed his desire to stay with United beyond the end of his current contract, which runs out this summer.
