Kevin Davies has apologised for the tackle which left Tom Cleverley with ankle ligament damage.

Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has contacted Tom Cleverley to apologise for a challenge that left the Manchester United midfielder with ankle ligament damage, his wife has confirmed.

The Wanderers captain brought down Cleverley during the first half of United's 5-0 victory at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday, an incident which has left the 22-year-old facing a month out on the sidelines.

Davies' wife Emma posted on her Twitter account: "For all the ill-informed haters... Kevin spoke to Tom Cleverly (sic) on the phone earlier. He would never intentionally hurt anyone."

Messages on a Cleverley Facebook page on Saturday evening claimed that he was angry that Davies has failed to apologise for the tackle, but United have since confirmed that the profile in question is fake.
