Jordy Clasie has insisted that he would have moved to Southampton even if he had been offered the chance to join Manchester United.
The Dutch international completed the switch to St Mary's from Feyenoord last month, where he previously played under Saints manager Ronald Koeman.
The 24-year-old midfielder told The Sun: "If the United interest had become concrete I think I still would have preferred Southampton. It's better to start lower and finish higher than the other way round."
Clasie made 41 appearances for the Eredivisie side last season.
