Manchester United captain Michael Carrick tips "fantastic player" Henrikh Mkhitaryan to play "a big part" for the Red Devils this season.

Manchester United captain Michael Carrick has tipped "fantastic player" Henrikh Mkhitaryan to play "a big part" for the Red Devils during the 2017-18 campaign.

The Armenian international joined United in last summer's transfer window off the back of 23-goal season with Borussia Dortmund.

The 28-year-old had to wait until September to make his full debut after struggling to come to terms with Premier League football, and despite ending the season with 11 goals, the attacker was criticised for some underwhelming performances.

Mkhitaryan has been in impressive form during United's preparations for the new campaign, however, and Carrick has backed his teammate to thrive next term.

"Henrikh is a fantastic player. He had a great season last term and everyone could see the improvement the longer he was here and how he adjusted to the league and playing for this club. He's got a big part to play this season, for sure, and hopefully for a long time," Carrick told reporters.

Man United will face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday night.
