Fletcher backs Rashford to score "a lot more goals"

Darren Fletcher has backed Marcus Rashford to score "a lot more goals" at Manchester United following the Englishman's brace during a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

Rashford netted a penalty in the first half at Stamford Bridge to put United into the lead before a stunning free kick on 73 minutes sealed the result for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Following a nine-game spell at United during which he did not score from open play, Rashford now has four goals in as many games for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Speaking after the game, Fletcher told Manchester Evening News: "I was really surprised that he didn't take the second penalty on Saturday, I wanted him to, but the fact he stepped up tonight shows his character.

"The confidence boost he got from the England goals and then the goal against Liverpool, even small things like putting Virgil van Dijk on his backside early in the game, the invincible defender like everyone thinks.

"I think all these things have given him a lot of confidence and scoring against Liverpool as a Manchester United player is massive. He's gone on from leaps and bounds, he's relaxed. His mate Martial is back now so he's not feeling the burden of being the out-and-out goalscorer, Martial is the number nine and Rashford will play off him, so I think we'll see a lot more goals going forward."

The 21-year-old emerged on the scene by scoring four goals in his opening pair of senior games against FC Midtjylland and Arsenal back in February 2016.

Rashford's goal during a 3-1 win over Norwich City on Sunday brought up his 50th senior United goal in 183 appearances.
