Erik ten Hag delivers Man United injury update following Southampton win

Ten Hag gives update on Man United injury scares in Southampton win

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided an update on Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui following the trio's injury scares in the 3-0 win over Southampton.

The Red Devils bounced back from consecutive defeats to claim a comprehensive victory against their newly-promoted opponents.

De Ligt scored his first Premier League goal to get Man United up and running, before Marcus Rashford ended his goal drought to give his side a two-goal lead at the break.

Southampton defender Jack Stephens was then shown a 79th-minute red card for a reckless challenge on Alejandro Garnacho, who went on to add to Man United's tally in stoppage time.

Although they enjoyed a successful trip to the South coast, Man United were handed a few injury scares during the course of the contest.

Martinez and Mazraoui limped off in the 74th and 77th-minute respectively, while De Ligt was forced off in the closing stages.

De Ligt revealed after the game that he was withdrawn due to a cramp rather than any major injury issue.

Ten Hag also confirmed the reason behind De Ligt's withdrawal, telling reporters in the post-match press conference: "It looks like [cramp] yes."

However, the Man United manager admitted that it was too early to comment on the extent of Martinez and Mazraoui's injury issues.

Ten Hag told BeIn Sports: "We had internationals, short in the season, some are short in the pre-season, some come from intercontinental flights so then you know you have a 12.30 game and you can struggle. Hopefully, it's nothing serious, we have to assess it today, or tomorrow and then we can see."

Ten Hag gives update on Hojlund, Shaw and Mount

The Dutchman also revealed that Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount are unlikely to return in time for Tuesday's EFL Cup meeting with Barnsley.

"Of course, it's an important period with many games to play – I think seven in 22 days," Ten Hag added. "We need everyone and hopefully players are returning.

"It will not be the case for the next game, but hopefully, in the next weeks they [Hojlund, Mount and Shaw] will return to the squad."

Man United will look to successfully negotiate the third-round tie before they turn their focus to a Premier League away meeting with Crystal Palace.
