Romelu Lukaku's record vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Romelu Lukaku's record vs. Spurs

Manchester United make the trip to Wembley to face Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening looking to open up an 11-point gap between themselves and fifth place.

United's title hopes are all but over due to the dominance of local rivals Manchester City this season, but they remain well placed to secure a top-four finish for only the second time since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Jose Mourinho's side have won all five of their matches without conceding a goal so far in 2018, scoring 12 times in the process.

Three of those goals have come from Romelu Lukaku, but the Belgian has often been criticised for his record against the big teams.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the striker has fared in his previous meetings with Spurs.

Lukaku has played against Spurs for three different clubs now, but he has only ever managed one goal - and one win - from his nine meetings with the North London outfit, making for his worst record against any club he has faced seven or more times in his career.

That solitary victory did come in his only previous meeting with Tottenham as a Manchester United player, though, as he provided the assist for Anthony Martial's winning goal at Old Trafford in October.

Indeed, while Lukaku's overall record against Wednesday's opponents is poor, he has directly contributed to three goals in his last three meetings with Spurs, scoring once and laying on two more for his teammates.

The Belgian's only goal against Mauricio Pochettino's men came in a 3-2 defeat with Everton at White Hart Lane last season, while in 2015-16 he also set up the goal which earned the Toffees a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Prior to that, though, Lukaku had failed to contribute to a goal in six games against Spurs with West Bromwich Albion and Everton.
