Jose Mourinho: Manchester United "double unlucky" to lose Europa League opener

Mourinho: United "double unlucky" to lose

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted to being disappointed by his side's 1-0 loss to Feyenoord in the Europa League due to the manner of the defeat.

The Red Devils' Group A campaign got off to a bad start in Rotterdam as Tonny Vilhena's goal 11 minutes from time settled a bland contest which saw both teams struggle in front of goal.

Feyenoord's breakthrough came amid controversial circumstances, however, as Nicolai Jorgensen appeared to be marginally offside when crossing for Vilhena to settle the tie at De Kuip.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Mourinho said: "Of course I'm unhappy. We lose the game in a moment we didn't deserve to. The second half, the game was even.

"We were always in control. We were trying to win, they were trying not to lose. It is double unlucky because it was a clear offside. The second half was better than the first. In the Europa League, we are going to be the team everyone wants to beat."

United prop up the Group A standings after Fenerbahce snatched a late draw from their trip to Zorya Luhansk elsewhere on Thursday evening.
