Paul Scholes slams Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tactics after Atalanta comeback

Scholes slams Solskjaer tactics after Atalanta comeback

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactics following their dramatic 3-2 victory against Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were trailing 2-0 at half time after a disappointing first 45 minutes, however Solskjaer's men came out fighting after the break, with goals from Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo turning the game on its head at Old Trafford.

Even though United secured three important points to move to the top of Group F, Scholes believes the club's supporters should not get too carried away and is concerned that the Red Devils may perform in a similar way on Sunday against Premier League rivals Liverpool.

"I get the United excitement, [but] that first half put me off the second half. If they were playing a better side they would have been out of sight," the 46-year-old told BT Sport.

"[Atalanta] had five players missing... the display was something I did not enjoy, it was worrying, it lacked unity and to me, can they go and play against better teams like that? No.

"It was a great night but that first half was a major worry. They showed great spirit but they conceded so many chances. Quality players make sure you don't win that game. Will they play that well against Liverpool? [I] imagine Jurgen Klopp [was] at home rubbing his hands together watching that first half."

After United's mouth-watering battle with Liverpool on Sunday, Solskjaer will prepare his side for challenging fixtures away against Tottenham Hotspur and Atalanta, before facing crosstown rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in November.
