Manchester City's Yaya Toure: 'I'm not deaf, I did hear monkey chants'

Toure stands by 'monkey chant' claims

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has insisted that he heard monkey chanting from a section of CSKA Moscow fans, despite the Russian outfit suggesting otherwise.

The Ivory Coast international complained to the match referee that he was being targeted with racist abuse during City's Champions League 2-1 victory in Russia on Wednesday.

Despite his claims, CSKA have suggested that Toure misheard the chanting, while his national teammate Seydou Doumbia has accused Toure of "exaggerating".

"I am not deaf," Toure told BBC Afrique. "Other people must have seen it. We are all humans. It is not a nice feeling to go and play a football match, to bring joy to the people and to be called a monkey or to hear monkey noises. I don't look like a monkey.

"Doumbia is a young brother. Someone I admire who I have known a long time, we come from the same country. I don't want to say things that will put him in trouble but you can see a little bit the manipulation around all this. It is so pathetic and so sad to see things like that. I am ashamed to still have to talk about this subject."

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against CSKA after receiving a written complaint from City.
