How Manchester City could line up against Brighton & Hove Albion

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for their Premier League showdown with Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday evening.

Manchester City will be aiming to keep their winning run going when they play host to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola's side eased into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 victory over Birmingham City at the weekend, with Bernardo Silva netting twice in quick succession before Phil Foden got in on the act before the half-time whistle blew.

That comfortable win saw the Citizens triumph for the sixth time in a row in all competitions, and a string of dominant performances in the Premier League has propelled them up to fifth in the table - four points behind Liverpool with two games in hand.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how City could line up against Brighton, who are only three points clear of the relegation zone.

A coronavirus outbreak ravaged Man City's squad over the festive period and they remain without Eric Garcia and Cole Palmer, both of whom are self-isolating.

However, Ederson has fully recovered and watched from the bench on Sunday, so Zack Steffen's brief stint in goal is likely to come to an end as Guardiola recalls his number one.

Joao Cancelo was taken off at half time against Birmingham so is sure to start here, but Guardiola may opt not to risk Kyle Walker again after the Englishman played the full 90 minutes having just recovered from COVID-19 infection.

Cancelo should therefore reprise his regular role on the right-hand side of defence while Benjamin Mendy starts at left-back, and John Stones is set to be welcomed back to the rearguard alongside Ruben Dias.

Ilkay Gundogan was an unused substitute in Sunday's win so is certain to line up alongside the ever-present Rodri in Guardiola's midfield, while Kevin De Bruyne was also hauled off at half time with the game already won and will be aiming to build on the 16 goal contributions he already boasts this season.

Ferran Torres is also back in the fold after recovering from coronavirus, but Bernardo Silva has broken back into Guardiola's starting lineup recently and should keep the Spaniard and Riyad Mahrez out of the team once more.

Raheem Sterling is questionable but is expected to be given the green light to play on Wednesday, and Gabriel Jesus will lead the line as Sergio Aguero - who has scored every time he has faced Brighton in the league - self-isolates after coming into contact with a COVID-positive individual.
