Phil Foden set for England Under-21 bow

The Manchester City midfielder has made five appearances this season.

Phil Foden is set for his England Under-21 debut as boss Aidy Boothroyd looks to book a spot at Euro 2019.

The Young Lions host Andorra in Chesterfield on Thursday needing a point to reach next year’s tournament in Italy and San Marino.

Boothroyd also takes his troops to Scotland on Tuesday in their final Group Four qualifier.

Manchester City’s Foden, Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson, on loan at Hoffenheim, and Leicester’s Harvey Barnes, on loan at West Brom, are all new to the squad and primed to play in at least one of the games.

Boothroyd said: “All three players will start in one of the games, it’s a good opportunity to have a look at them.

“I have been impressed by all three of them, it seems to be harder to get picked for the Under-21s which is good for me.

“It’s brilliant Gareth (Southgate) has taken them (Mason Mount and James Maddison) up to the seniors and it gives me an opportunity to have a look at our new three. The hardest thing is picking the right team.”

Unbeaten England are six points clear of Scotland and Ukraine in qualifying, with Andorra winless and bottom of Group Four having scored just once.

Boothroyd added: “We have got to beat them, first should always beat last – especially at home – but until it’s done we need a point. We’re going all out for three.

“Then we have Scotland, which is going to be feisty. Two difficult games for different reasons but we’re looking to win.

“One of my big lessons from Poland and the Euros last year was the Germans might not have had the best players but in terms of a team they were very good and tactically a bit more aware than we were at the time.

“We’ll be focused on winning the games but if there’s anything we can take into 2019 that’s what we’ll be doing.”
