Rabbi Matondo: 'I could not turn down Schalke 04 offer'

Matondo 'couldn't turn down Schalke offer'

Former Manchester City player Rabbi Matondo has revealed that he has no regrets about leaving England to pursue first-team football at Schalke 04.

The Welsh winger signed for Schalke from City in the January transfer window for a reported fee of £11m.

Matondo failed to make an appearance for Pep Guardiola's first-team squad, and the 18-year-old admits that a lack of playing time played a role in his departure.

"It was an offer I couldn't turn down," Matondo told reporters.

"In footballing terms I wasn't a regular around the first team. I trained with the first team and it was a good experience training with Pep and the other players. They are top players.

"It is not City's fault, they have a wonderful team with wonderful players. But if you want to break in at City it is not going to be easy. If I had stayed there, then I would have tried my best to break through. But I had other options and I thought it was the best time for me and my footballing ability to progress somewhere else."

Matondo has made three Bundesliga appearances at Schalke so far but is yet to score his first goal for his new side.
