Football Association: 'Pep Guardiola ribbon wear was act of defiance'

Pep Guardiola's "defiance" in continually wearing a yellow ribbon is why he was fined £20,000, according to the written reasons published by the Football Association.

The Football Association has revealed that Pep Guardiola's fine for wearing a yellow ribbon was because the Manchester City boss did so in an "act of defiance".

In its written reasons explaining the £20,000 fine, the FA confirmed that it had sent Guardiola "numerous warning letters" about sporting the ribbon.

Guardiola accepted an FA charge of "wearing a political message" on March 5, and was also warned by the governing body about his future conduct.

The former Barcelona manager had been wearing the ribbon to press conferences and on the touchline since October to support imprisoned politicians in his native Catalonia.

The FA spoke to the Man City manager about the situation in December and had previously issued two formal warnings.

Action was taken after Guardiola wore it at pitchside - he is free to wear it elsewhere - during Man City's FA Cup fifth-round loss to League One side Wigan on February 19.

The 47-year-old did not wear the ribbon during the Citizens' Premier League win over Chelsea on Sunday but he did during the news conference afterwards.

Guardiola also sported the item during Man City's most recent Champions League game against Basel on the previous Wednesday as UEFA has different rules on political symbols.
