Derby importance instilled in Danny Welbeck

Derby importance instilled in Welbeck

Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck has admitted that the Manchester derby holds significance for him, after failing a trial at Manchester City.

City rejected a nine-year-old Welbeck who went on to join United a few weeks later.

The 22-year-old is no stranger to derbies and says that the importance of a win is instilled from a young age.

"I've been brought up on the Manchester derbies and they are special to me," Welbeck said.

"Particularly as I was on trial at City when I was younger and didn't get taken on.

"I've been playing for United against City from the age of nine upwards. And even at that age, it was instilled in you about the importance of a derby."

United welcome City to Old Trafford on Monday evening, with the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 18 points.
