Mallorca vs Celta Vigo - prediction, team news, lineups

Two teams that lost in gameweek one of the 2025-26 La Liga campaign will lock horns for an intriguing match on Saturday afternoon, with Mallorca welcoming Celta Vigo to Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.

Mallorca suffered a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in their first game of the season, while Celta were beaten 2-0 at home by Getafe, so both sides will be determined to put three points on the board here.

Match preview

Mallorca had an utterly disastrous first half against Barcelona in their season opener, conceding two goals and also having two players sent off, with Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi given their marching orders.

In fairness to Jagoba Arrasate's side, there was a huge improvement in the second period considering that they had just nine players, but Barcelona scored again in the final exchanges through Lamine Yamal.

The Pirates finished 10th in La Liga last season and will again be eyeing a similar spot this term, but a push for the European spots is also possible if they are able to put together a run of consistent form.

Mallorca have signed Pablo Torre, Lucas Bergstrom, Marash Kumbulla and Mateo Joseph during this summer's transfer window, and there are expected to be more incomings before the transfer window closes.

The Pirates lost both of their league matches with Celta last season, including a 2-1 reverse when the pair locked horns in the corresponding game at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.

Celta lead the overall head-to-head record between these two sides, having posted 20 wins to Mallorca's 18, while there have also been 12 draws in their 50 previous meetings in all competitions.

Like Mallorca, the Sky Blues will enter this match off the back of a disappointing result, having been beaten 2-0 by Getafe in their opening match of the new season on Sunday afternoon.

Claudio Giraldez's side will play Europa League football this season, qualifying for the league phase of the competition courtesy of their seventh-placed finish in Spain's top flight last term.

Celta will be expecting to finish in a similar spot this term, especially considering their transfer business, with five quality players being added to the squad in the shape of Ilaix Moriba, Ferran Jutgla, Borja Iglesias, Bryan Zaragoza and Ionut Radu.

The Sky Blues picked up 19 points from their 19 away league matches last season, while Mallorca had 27 points to show from their 19 La Liga fixtures in front of their own supporters.

Team News

Mallorca will be missing both Muriqi and Morlanes through suspension on Saturday, with the pair sent off in their team's three-goal defeat to the champions Barcelona last time out.

Samu Costa and Ivan Cuellar are injury doubts, but the home side are otherwise in good shape in terms of the fitness of their squad, and there are not expected to be any major surprises when it comes to their XI.

Mateo Joseph could be the player to benefit from Muriqi's absence, while Toni Lato is also bidding to be introduced into the starting side for the clash with Celta.

The visitors, meanwhile, will be without the services of Carl Starfelt, but no fresh issues have been reported.

Borja Iglesias is likely to be introduced in the final third of the field on Saturday, with the striker a substitute against Getafe, but the experienced Iago Aspas should keep hold of his starting role.

Zaragoza is another player pushing to start, but the attacker is likely to again be named on the bench.

Mallorca possible starting lineup:

Roman; Kumbulla, Raillo, Valjent; Morey, Darder, Lato, Mojica; Torre; Joseph, Asano

Celta Vigo possible starting lineup:

Rueda; Rodriguez, Lago, Alonso; Mingueza, Moriba, Beltran, Carreira; Aspas, Iglesias, Jutgla

We say: Mallorca 1-1 Celta Vigo

This is a tough match to call, and we are expecting it to be a tight affair, as both managers will be wary of suffering another defeat, so it could be a low-scoring draw on Saturday.
