Wycombe Wanderers beat Luton Town in five-goal thriller

Wycombe Wanderers get the better of five goals in the first half to beat Luton Town 3-2 at Kenilworth Road.

Wycombe Wanderers have recorded another vital win in their promotion bid with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Luton Town.

A frantic first half started in the second minute as Wycombe took the lead through Sam Saunders, who capitalised to fire home after the home side had twice missed the chance to clear a cross from the right wing.

Luton were back on level terms just five minutes later as Luke Guttridge forced a fine save from Matt Ingram to give Elliot Lee the easy task of tapping in the equaliser from close range.

Wycombe were gifted the opportunity to regain the lead midway through the first half when Luke Wilkinson brought down Matt Bloomfield in the box, and Paul Hayes stepped up to stroke the penalty into the bottom corner.

The pick of the goals then arrived to give the visitors a 3-1 lead as Alfie Mawson exchanged clever passes with Hayes before beating Elliot Justham with a fine finish.

However, Luton managed to reduce the deficit just before the break when Michael Harriman met a high ball with a cushioned header to allow Lee to add the finishing touch.

Luton carried the momentum into the second half, but it was Wycombe who had the opportunity to kill the game off when Sam Wood sliced just wide from an inviting Hayes cross.

Wycombe were forced to withstand a barrage of pressure for long spells, with Lee threatening to complete his hat-trick when he dragged an effort wide of the post.

The visiting defence held firm in the closing stages to secure a win which moves them level on points with second-placed Shrewsbury Town.
