Liverpool 'lead race for Jan Vertonghen'

Jan Vertonghen is a reported target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, with the Tottenham defender expected to leave if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is ready to lure Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims that Liverpool are keen on the player as they look to bolster their back four with the possibility of Champions League football on the horizon next season.

Vertonghen last week hinted that he could leave the White Hart Lane outfit if they fail to qualify for Europe's top club competition, and he could be joined at Anfield by Ashley Cole if Chelsea decide against offering the England international a new deal.

Spurs signed Vertonghen from Dutch giants Ajax in 2012.
