Liverpool 1-2 Wigan Athletic

Gary Caldwell scores the winner as Wigan Athletic beat Liverpool 2-1.

Wigan Athletic secured a vital three points in their fight for Premier League safety by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield this afternoon.

It was Liverpool who started the match the better and Stewart Downing might have opened the scoring after just six minutes, but his strike was smartly blocked by James McArthur.

Wigan remained a threat, however, and Victor Moses might have scored after ten minutes, but Martin Skrtel was on hand to make the block.

Wigan were awarded a penalty after 30 minutes when Skrtel felled Moses in the box, and Shaun Maloney stepped up to send the away side into the lead.

Liverpool continued to push for the equaliser in the latter stages of the half, with the Anfield crowd beginning to air their frustrations.

It did not take long for Liverpool to make their mark in the second period, however, as Luis Suarez tied the game at 1-1 with a cool finish after 47 minutes.

Liverpool thought they had taken the lead after 54 minutes when Suarez headed home, but he was penalised for handball and shown a yellow card for his troubles.

Wigan moved 2-1 ahead, against the run of play, after 63 minutes when Gary Caldwell collected a James McCarthy pass before finding the back of the net.

The home side continued to lack invention in the latter stages of the match, with Steven Gerrard and Suarez struggling to influence the tie.

Wigan remain in 19th in the Premier League, while Liverpool sit seventh.
