Gareth Southgate: 'Jordon Ibe, Joe Gomez have to impress Jurgen Klopp'

England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate feels that Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Jordon Ibe will have to work hard to impress their new manager Jurgen Klopp.

England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate has urged Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Jordon Ibe to impress their new manager Jurgen Klopp.

Both players were regulars in the first team under Brendan Rodgers this season, but now face uncertainty over their status in the starting lineup after the arrival of the German.

Southgate told reporters: "I guess they already know that they've got to impress a new manager. They are both disappointed because somebody who has picked them and given them a chance has gone and I think it's important that players remember that.

"Once they've done that they have to be ready to impress the new manager that comes in because that's the life of a footballer.

"I have spoken to them both because we always spend a lot of time individually with players to find out how they are and how they're doing at their club. They have been very focused on what we're doing."

Ibe and Gomez are expected to start for the Young Lions in their 2017 European Under-21 Championships qualifier against Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
