Joe Allen will miss the remainder of Liverpool's season because he needs surgery on his shoulder injury.

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has had his campaign ended early because he requires shoulder surgery.

Manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed earlier this month that the Wales international had been struggling with the injury since October, although he gave no indication as to when Allen would go under the knife.

However, in a short statement on the club's official website this afternoon, Liverpool doctor Zaf Iqbal revealed that the 23-year-old required the season-ending operation now.

"Joe Allen is due to have a left shoulder operation tomorrow morning in Liverpool and will be ready to return to football at the beginning of next season," said Iqbal.

Allen joined the Reds last summer from Swansea City for a reported £15m.
