Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Sheffield United

Liverpool injury, suspension list vs. Sheffield United

Liverpool welcome struggling Sheffield United to Anfield on Saturday evening looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp's side have picked up just one point from their last two games - a 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa followed by a highly-contentious 2-2 derby draw with Everton - but still head into the weekend sitting third in the table.

The Reds were also victorious in the Champions League on Wednesday night, making light of their numerous injury concerns with a clean sheet in their 1-0 win at Ajax.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of the champions' latest injury and suspension news ahead of Sheffield United's visit this weekend.

Sadio Mane

Status: Minor doubt Type of injury: Leg Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Liverpool fans may have been concerned to see Sadio Mane taken off after 60 minutes against Ajax and immediately have ice strapped to his right leg, but Klopp was quick to allay any fears over his fitness, confirming that the winger had been suffering with a dead leg but insisting that it is not a serious issue.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: Unknown

Liverpool are still reeling from the news that star defender Virgil van Dijk will likely miss the remainder of the season following Jordan Pickford's reckless challenge in the derby last weekend. The Dutchman will require surgery on his ACL injury, with the latest reports suggesting that the problem is even worse than first feared.

Thiago Alcantara

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Thiago Alcantara was another of the wounded party to emerge from the derby after being on the end of a knee-high red-card challenge from Richarlison late on. Fortunately for Liverpool the Spaniard's injury is not thought to be serious and, after missing out against Ajax in midweek, he could be back in contention for this one.

Naby Keita

Status: Minor doubt Type of injury: Coronavirus Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Naby Keita was expected to be involved on Wednesday, only to miss out on a place in the matchday squad. However, the midfielder should be back available for this weekend.

Alisson Becker

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Shoulder Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Alisson Becker is making better progress than expected in his recovery from a shoulder injury and Klopp even refused to completely rule him out of returning in time for this match, although it would be a surprise if he was on the teamsheet on Saturday.

Joel Matip

Status: Minor doubt Type of injury: Muscle Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Joel Matip also picked up an injury in the derby to further limit Liverpool's defensive options, although his muscle problem is minor and he is expected to be in contention for Sheffield United's visit.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Status: Out Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: Unknown

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains in long-term rehabilitation after picking up a knee injury in pre-season, and no date has yet been put on his return.

Kostas Tsimikas

Status: Out Type of injury: Thigh Possible return date: Unknown

Summer signing Kostas Tsimikas has not featured since the EFL Cup victory over Lincoln City on September 24, with his thigh injury proving to be more problematic than first thought. The full-back will once again miss out this weekend too.

Liverpool have no players suspended for this game.
