Team News: Raheem Sterling on Manchester City bench for Liverpool game

Sterling on City bench for Liverpool game

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has only been named on the bench for the first leg of the club's Champions League quarter-final tie with Liverpool.

Sterling featured for just over an hour against Everton at the weekend but Pep Guardiola has opted to leave the England international out of his starting lineup for the trip to Merseyside.

The remainder of the team is as expected, with Vincent Kompany keeping his place ahead of John Stones and Gabriel Jesus starting in attack as Sergio Aguero continues to recover from injury.

There are few surprises in the Liverpool side, too, with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all being named in the final third by Jurgen Klopp.

The defence picks itself due to injuries, but Emre Can misses out with a back injury so James Milner is selected in the centre of the pitch.

Young centre-back Conor Masterson - who has not made a first-team appearance for Liverpool - is named on the bench alongside the returning Nathaniel Clyne.

Liverpool: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Mane, Salah, Firmino Subs: Mignolet, Clyne, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Ings, Solanke, Masterson

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Otamendi, Laporte; Fernandinho, Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Sane; Jesus Subs: Bravo, Danilo, Stones, Sterling, Delph, Bernardo, Zinchenko
