Mohamed Salah closing in on Champions League goalscoring record

Mohamed Salah closing in on Champions League goalscoring record

Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah will aim to move closer to breaking a Champions League goalscoring record when the Reds welcome Villarreal to Anfield for the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

Eight of the 29-year-old's 30 goals this season have come in the Champions League, although he did not net in either leg of his side's quarter-final with Benfica.

Nevertheless, Salah has now moved onto 33 Champions League goals as a Liverpool player, while he previously netted two for Basel and one for Roma before his move to Anfield.

Ahead of the visit of Unai Emery's side, the Egypt international is now only four strikes away from breaking the record for the most Champions League goals scored for an English club.

Sergio Aguero previously struck 36 times in the competition for Manchester City, while Didier Drogba did so on the same number of occasions during his time at Chelsea.

Salah's best Champions League campaign to date came in his debut season for Liverpool in 2017-18, during which he netted 10 goals and provided five assists in 13 European matches.

The attacker is yet to extend his Liverpool stay beyond the summer of 2023 but recently hinted that he could sign a new deal on Merseyside.
