Buffon charged over referee comments

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has been charged by UEFA over comments he made about referee Michael Oliver in the wake of his side's Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid.

The veteran stopper was sent off in the second leg of the contest during an incident that saw Los Blancos win a late penalty, from which they scored to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

After the match, Buffon accused Oliver of having "a bag of rubbish" instead of "a heart" and claimed that he should "sit in the stands" and "eat crisps".

UEFA has charged the goalkeeper over his remarks, accusing him of violating the governing body's "general principles of conduct".

Buffon's case, which also includes disciplinary action related to his red card, will be heard on May 31.
